Cultural Heritage Asset

Any physical space or feature in the landscape or seascape that, by its nature (either extant or former), imparts knowledge about the historic environment. This includes built, buried and underwater heritage of all dates and types. All known Tangible Cultural Heritage is a Heritage Asset and is recorded within the HER. For this document, tangible cultural heritage could include:

1) landscapes: cultural landscapes, archaeological sites and landscapes, palaeontological sites, urban landscapes (such as modern heritage districts), sites and areas;

2) buildings and structures: historic buildings, archaeological remains and modern heritage buildings;

3) site elements: context or features within a landscape, building, structure or urbanscape.

Damage mapping

Drawing issue(s)/loss(es) of a cultural heritage asset after assessing its condition.

Historic Environment

All aspects that arise from the interaction between persons and places over time, that provide a testimony of past human activity, whether visual, buried, underwater or in the form of a cultural landscape or site setting.

Intervention mapping

A drawing of actions (to be) conducted affecting (positively or negatively) the condition of a cultural heritage asset.

Metric Survey

A method of providing measured data to get details of the construction and condition of a cultural heritage asset.

Modern Heritage

A structure, building, district, site, area, landscape, whether completed or not, which is the built product of the human creative process prompted by significant developments since the discovery of oil, marking a shift from traditional customs.

Photo Key Plans

Location and direction marked on a plan of the photographs taken for the photographic portfolio.

Guidelines and Standards

The established requirements for the recording, documentation and information management tasks associated with the conservation of the historic environment of Abu Dhabi. The standards outline the required contents of the deliverables as well as how they should be maintained and managed.

Topographic Survey

A method of providing measured data to get details of the features of the terrain and depicting all natural features and elevations of an area.

Vernacular Architecture

Local construction, using traditional materials and resources from the area where the building is located.
