The HEDI is an initiative of the Historic Environment Department

at the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi.

The aim of this initiative is to train the HED and stay current with

digital workflows and technologies, while adhering to HED guidelines

and standards on heritage documentation.

The emirate of Abu Dhabi is imbued with a unique rich cultural heritage legacy to be safeguarded for future generations. Documentation of cultural heritage is essential to protect and manage this historic environment as it allows us to:

  • Understand the different typologies
  • Identify, measure and monitor physical changes and external factors
  • Plan conservation and management strategies and interventions
  • Create information for the interpretation, presentation, and promotion
  • Generate awareness
  • Mitigate risks
  • Revealing new evidence
  • Maintain a record for posterity

The importance of documentation is stated in the Cultural Mandate of the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) which is responsible for protecting and promoting Abu Dhabi’s cultural heritage.

Documentation accompanies each task and activity related to the study, conservation and management of the historic environment – such as surveys, excavations, investigations, conservation, monitoring, management, and dissemination.
